What can you expect from a trichologist?
Happy new year, everyone!
2022 was a very exciting year for me. After fifteen years as a colourist, I qualified as a trichologist and now offer consultations to clients in Cardiff and London who are worried about hair loss. I have so many plans for 2023 and can’t wait to see what this year brings.
As a hairdresser, I have seen first-hand how hair loss can impact the wellbeing of my clients. However, most people look a bit confused when I mention trichology to them. That’s why my number one goal this year is to raise awareness of the importance of hair loss and scalp care, and what can be done to help.
What does a trichologist do?
Trichology looks to get to the root cause of hair loss, hair thinning and scalp conditions. It relies on natural solutions and a holistic approach to treatment, rather than hair transplant surgery or adding temporary volume and length with extensions. As a certified trichologist, my job is to see the bigger picture. I work closely with my clients to find out what might be affecting their hair loss.
Stress, diet, illness and genetics are just a few things that can have a direct impact on our hair. Together, we delve into any lifestyle or health concerns and create a bespoke treatment plan based on each client’s individual needs.
Is a trichologist right for me?
Hair loss is more common than you might think, for both men and women. For example, did you know that over 50% of people in the UK will experience significant hair loss during their lifetime?
That is a huge number, but it’s important to know that there are a huge range of effective treatments for hair loss. In many cases, it can be prevented altogether.
As a certified trichologist, I diagnose and treat a range of conditions from female and male pattern hair loss to alopecia, trichotillomania, dandruff and inflammation. If you’re not sure whether a trichologist is right for you, feel free to get in touch to discuss your condition.
What can I expect from a consultation?
As a colour specialist, I know that the main thing my clients look for is a comfortable environment and a stylist they can trust. This is even more important during a trichology consultation, because hair loss can have a huge emotional impact.
Your trichology consultation will take place one-on-one in a supportive, non-judgemental atmosphere. Our chat will be confidential, of course, and you’ll never be pressured to talk about anything that could make you feel uncomfortable.
We’ll talk about your overall health, lifestyle and general wellbeing, and I’ll ask you about any family history of hair loss, medical issues and hormones so we can get to the root cause of the problem.
I’ll then use a trichoscope to examine the follicles and density of your hair. This digital microscope allows me to zoom in on any potential issues that aren’t visible to the naked eye and gives me an in-depth picture of what’s going on. Don’t worry, this is a pain-free process!
After our consultation, I’ll put together a personalised treatment plan based on your diagnosis and lifestyle. This includes a detailed product regime, nutritional and hormonal advice, an online treatment plan portal and an hour-long follow-up consultation to find out how you’re getting on.
Anyone worried about the condition of their hair and scalp can benefit from a trichology consultation, and there is no right or wrong time to get in touch. If you’d like to start your journey to better scalp health, book a 15 minute pre-consultation with me here.
