Summer Hair Care
Summer Hair care and the how’s and whys you need to know about protecting your hair and scalp from UV rays.
As summer approaches, we diligently apply sunscreen to protect our skin but often neglect our hair. Just like our skin, our hair is susceptible to damage from sun exposure. Understanding the science behind this can help us take the necessary steps to keep our locks healthy and strong. Scientific Insights Studies show UV exposure causes significant damage to hair fibres, breaking down proteins and degrading melanin, the pigment responsible for hair colour. This not only affects colour but also compromises hair health and resilience long term.
If you’ve been following me for a while you would off heard me say this before, a week in the sun without no hair protection is the equivalent as a years worth of straightening.
Ok so How does Sun Exposure Affect the Hair shaft…….. UV Radiation
The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, including UVA and UVB rays, which can significantly damage hair.
-UVA Penetrates deep into the hair shaft, affecting the cortex, which contains the hair's pigment and structure. ( leading to your hair colour fading )
- UVB Primarily affects the hair's outer layer, the cuticle, leading to a rough texture and loss of shine.
The Structural Damage
Protein Degradation, UV radiation breaks down keratin in the hair, weakening its structure and leading to brittleness.
Loss of Natural Oils ,The sun strips away natural oils, leaving hair dry and prone to damage.
Colour Fading, UV radiation accelerates fading in colour-treated hair, affecting vibrancy.
My Top Tips for Protecting Your Hair from the Sun
Wear Protective Headgear
Hats and scarves provide a physical barrier between your hair and UV rays.
Use UV Protection Hair Products
Look for hair care products with UV filters, such as leave-in conditioners, sprays, and serums.
Regular Conditioning Treatments
Deep conditioning treatments help replenish lost moisture and restore elasticity.
Avoid Peak Sun Hours
Limit sun exposure during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) when UV radiation is strongest. Stay in the shade when possible.
